HERO"S JOURNEY (JOSEPH CAMPBELL):

There are twelve steps to a hero's journey, this journey applies to all cultures, race, and features in the lives of every person in the world. They all face similar movements of separation, descent, ordeal and return, Although some steps may be avoided or repeated, depending on the person's journey. THIS ADVENTURE IS NOT LINEAR.

12 steps = transformation

Ordinary world = people follow the status quo and live by how other people want them to
Call to adventure = destiny has summoned the hero,  and they usually have to delve into their fears and the unknown.
Refusal of the call = there is always refusal in the beginning, suggesting that they are avoiding their issues self consciously
Meeting with the mentor = Wisdom and guidance is given, though the mentor isn't always physical (it can be celebrities you look up to)
Crossing the first threshold = Ordinary world moves into the special world, this is the point of no return
Test allies, enemies = This is the part to test the hero in preparation for ordeals ahead
Approach to the inner most cave = this is the inner conflict that hasn't been faced yet, it can be a physical place
Ordeal = Hitting rock bottom or the deepest conflict where everything is on the line and life is changed as they know it.
The reward = hero receives a reward whether that is physical, knowledge or love, this is inner change where the hero settles a conflict or heals a trauma
Road back = act 3 = The hero realises the special world should be left behind, but the shadow comes back with a vengeance (addiction to drugs/alcohol, or ex-relationships)
resurrection = Stakes are at their very highest and the hero has transformed into his better version  in what s called an 'ego death'. they become fearless and this is a critical point in the journey where the hero realises they had the power in them all along.
Return with the elixir = Once the transformation has come to an end, the hero gains a new understanding and returns to the ordinary world to use the lessons of his journey to help other people. If not the hero is doomed to retake the adventure until they learn the lesson.
HEROS JOURNEY APPLIED TO A FILM:

Image result for AI film

This hero's journey can be applied to Steven Spielberg's Artificial Intelligence film. The protagonist,  David, is a robot with artificial intelligence who was adopted by a family who's son was in intensive care. They used him as a replacement until their son was healthy again, though the AI had no knowledge of their fake love. This is an application of the ordinary world, David was following orders and lived how he was told to, going through robotic checks that were mandatory. Once the original son returns, there is conflict between David and the son/his friendship group, leading to the parents deciding it was a good idea to get rid of David after one particular occasion. The call of the adventure was forced upon David, when he was abandoned on the side of a road. He had to survive knowing his love wasn't returned. The refusal of the call was shown in the way David didn't want to admit his parents didn't love him anymore, leading him to be caught by other humans. A form of wisdom and guidance was given by the talking, robotic bear. The bear was looking out for David whilst he was captured, though some guidance arrived in the form of Gigolo Joe. David was tested, when captured, but he managed to survive thanks to the form of his AI (Test allies, enemies) David also gains a form of friendship with Gigolo Joe, who promises to help him find a way to find the 'Blue Fairy'. David's approach to the inner most cave appears when they make it to the city where a 'wizard' can answer any and all questions, the two characters try to look for the fairy this way. When no clear answers appear, they follow a lead, leading towards the ordeal. Whilst Gigolo Joe ends up in trouble, David manages to find a way to his creator's workplace which is found nearly abandoned, leading to some eerie moments where he meets another version of himself. David feels like he is tricked into believing he is loved and comes to a philosophical debate on what is happening. David ends up in the water, finding an underwater fairground where he finds the 'Blue fairy' he has been looking for (his reward). Gigolo Joe has also found his way to be with David before he disappeared again. There is a road back when the 'Blue fairy' / aliens are able to grant the wish of seeing his mother again, yet it is only for a day, in which she will then cease to exist again. David has come to terms with the fact that he is loved, and releases his mother so he can go back to an apocalyptic reality. He feels even more alone. There isn't exactly a resurrection  as happiness is given and there isn't much of a world to go back to.
